That’s a difficult question, um.... I was born in London and grew up in Australia.
(Although some people say that I never actually grew up! Haha)
難しい質問ですね...。生まれはロンドンで、育ちはオーストラリアです.
(いつまでも子供だとよく言われるけど...(笑)
So you went to school in Australia?
それでは、オーストラリアの学校に通っていたんですか？
Yes. A private grammar school in Melbourne.
そうです。メルボルンにある私立のグラマースクール(リッチなところ...訳者コメント)に通っていました。
Your hometown is Melbourne?
故郷はメルボルンですか？
Well it’s difficult to know where my hometown is now. I’ve been travelling for so long and my family has since left Melbourne.
今の自分にとっては、どこが故郷かというのはちょっと難しいですね。今までずいぶん長く旅行を続けてきたし、家族は今、
メルボルンには住んでいません。
When did you start travelling?
いつから旅行し始めたんですか？
When I was 17 actually. I’ll never forget that trip. I was working in Melbourne as a car mechanic and a friend invited me up to Brisbane for my Christmas holiday. I didn’t have much money, so I hitchhiked. I only got about 400klm on the first day and stayed in a room above a pub in the countryside. I remember clearly waking up the next morning with an overwhelming feeling of total freedom! Nobody really expected me anywhere for weeks, I had enough money if I was careful, and could go anywhere! It was that bug that hit me which still remains with me today.
17歳のときからです。はじめの旅行は忘れられませんね。そのころ、私はメルボルンで車の整備士をやっていたのですが、クリスマスの休みにあ る友人からブリスベンに来ないかと誘われたんです。お金がｂﾜりなかったから、ヒッチハイクしました。はじめの1日で400kmくらいしか進めなくて
(日本で考えるとかなりの距離ですが、オーストラリアでは本当に少しの距離です)、田舎のパブの上にａBる部屋に泊まりました。
次の日の朝起きたときの、これ以上ないくらいの自由を手に入れたという感覚を、今でも鮮明に覚えています。何週間も、
どこにいるのか誰にも知られることなかったのです。ちょっと気をつけていれば十分なお金を持っていられたし、どこにだって 好きな場所に行けました。今になってもその悪癖が抜けなくって...。
Where have you been since then?
その後はどこに行ったのですか？
I travelled all over Australia and lived in many different places. I eventually needed to go further and moved to Indonesia where I stayed for a couple of years. Then I went home for a short time, met my wife (ex-wife now) Lived in Hong Kong for a couple more years and came to Japan in 1997.
オーストラリア中を旅して、いろいろな場所に 住みました。結局それではまだまだ物足りなく、さらに遠く、インドネシアに移り、2,3年過ごしました。
そのころ、オーストラリアに一時的に戻ったときに妻に出逢い(別れましたが)、その後2,3年香港で生活をした後、1997年、日本に来ました。
What was you’re best trip?
一番の旅行は？
To answer that question, I think I will always answer... the last trip.
その質問の答えは...いつ聞かれても、常に一番最近の旅行が一番いいですね。
Where did you go?
今までに訪れた場所は？
I went to USA and rode a Harley Davidson from Orlando to New Orleans and went to Mexico and visited my cousins in New York for Christmas. It was all great, but I’d have to say the ride was the best part! I met sooooo many people! New Orleans is a blast too.
アメリカに渡って、オーランドからニューオリンズ、メキシコまで、ハーリー・デイヴィッドソンで旅して、
クリスマスにはニューヨークのいとこの家まで行きました。とにかく全てがとても良かったけれど、特にバイクでの旅、というのが本当に最高だった！
数え切れないたくさんの人たちに出会いました。あと、ニューオリンズも、かなりすごかったな。
Have you always been a teacher?
いつも講師の仕事をしていたのですか？
No. I did many different jobs in Australia and had a business there .(cataloguing company contracting mostly to the government.) I had a logistics consultancy in Indonesia. Worked as assistant to the Project Manager at the new international airport site in Hong Kong.
違いますね。オーストラリアでは様々な仕事を経験して、自分自身でビジネスも始めました(カタログを作る会社で、大体が政府関係の契約でした)。
インドネシアでは流通コンサルタント業を経営し、香港では、香港国際空港でプロジェクトマネージャーのアシスタントをしていました。
So you’re experienced in International business?

How did you become a teacher in Japan?
日本で講師になったのはなぜですか？
It was a decision that I made in Hong Kong with my wife. It seemed the thing to do in Japan. So when I finished my job in HK, I studied ESL English at Cambridge University and then came to Nagakute and opened Sensei San nine years ago.
英会話講師の仕事は、香港にいたときに妻と相談して決めた仕事です。日本での仕事として、ぴったりだと思いました。そこで、香港での仕事を終えた後、 ケンブリッジ大学でESL(English as a Second Language・第二言語としての英語)を学び、9年前、長久手町でSensei San English Schoolを始めました。
What happened to your wife?
奥さんとはその後？
I killed her. She’s in the freezer now. Haha..... No, she lives in Canada now.
抹殺して...うちの冷凍庫にいるよ(笑)冗談だけど。今はカナダにいます。
How do you like teaching?
教えるのは楽しいですか？
I love it! I get to meet lots of people and have a few laughs while I’m working and many of my students have become good friends.
すごく好きです！たくさんの人たちに会えるし、教えている間に大笑いしてしまうこともあ るし、生徒さんたちは皆、良い友達です。
What do you like to do in your free time?
教えている以外の時間は何をしていますか
I like to be outside..... walking, cycling, gym etc. I like cooking and of course, I spend a lot of time doing school stuff. I do some volunteer work too.
外に出るのが好きですね。散歩、サイクリング、ジム等々。料理をするのも好きだし、もちろん、レッスンの用意などスクールのことにもかなりの時間を割きます。それから, ボランティアもやっています。
How do you teach?
どんな風にレッスンを行っているのですか？
That’s another difficult question. All students are different and have different requirements. Mostly, I try to get my students to open up more and teach them that communication is most important. I feel that this style fills the gap left by teachers in High schools here. After all, isn’t that what we all want to do through language?.... communicate! It’s a lot more complicated than that from the teachers point of view, but that’s what my students get in the end. Of course, some students need something more specific like TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS etc.
それもまた、難しい質問ですね。皆それぞれ違う人間だし、目的も違っている。ただ、生徒さんたちには「もっと心を開いて、コミュニケーションが一番大切なんだ」ということを中心に教えています。このレッスン方法は、日本の中学・高校で植えつけられた英語学習と英会話のギャップを埋める のにぴったりのように感じています。結局、言葉というのはそういうものではないですか...？コミュニケートです！ 講師という立場からみると、 それ以上にもっと複雑なのですが、生徒さんたちがここで学ぶことは、結局は『会話』すること！ もちろん、TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS等の資格のためだとか、もっと限定した目的で勉強している生徒さんもいます。
What range of students do you have?
生徒さんたちの年齢層や職業は？
Wow...a wide range.... From Junior High School kids to retirees to professionals like doctors, nurses, scientists, Juku teachers...everybody and anybody!!
えぇ...とにかく多種多様です。中学生から退職後の方々、お医者さん、看護士さん、科学者、塾の先生などなど...。いろいろな方がいます。

Lots.

Are you going to expand your school? I mean employ more teachers?
スクールを拡大する予定は？ 講師を雇う予定はあ りますか？
I’ve often thought of doing that, but no, I don’t think so. I like it small and I can get in touch with each and every student personally.
I think that’s important.... To understand my students needs more.
そのことについては良く考えるけれど、答えは「No」です。私は直接生徒の皆さんと触れ合える小さなスクールが気に入っています。
生徒さんたちをよく理解するには、直接触れ合うことが大切なのです。
