Simon has been my teacher and at the same time one of my best friends, among those who I have ever met. I found Simon to be professional in his work with a friendliness about him that can put the shyest person at ease. I am sure that his vast range of life experiences, profound knowledge, wide variety of his associations, general & technical knowledge and curiosity take lots of people by surprise. I strongly recommend Simon and his English class ‘Senseisan’ to anyone who wishes to learn English. I believe that the quintessence of learning foreign languages is to know its culture behind, interact with many kinds of people and enrich your view of things such that you have never experienced before, and that you will learn really lots of things through Simon.
Senseisan is never limited to its quality of English teaching. Simon strongly believes in his work and getting to know his students at a personal level to the point of home parties at his house and BBQ parties, which sometimes took place. These occasions were wonderfully enjoyable, as much as anything without parallel. In particular, his homemade dishes such as hamburger are a masterpiece. The people joining the parties were common students, business people, medical and scientific doctors, engineers, salesman, musicians, housewives… Through Senseisan, such a vast cross section of society would perhaps otherwise never have had the chance to meet, ineract and learn from each other in such a harmonious atmosphere in a society seemingly created by Simon. As he always says… “People cannot learn if they are not happy!”. More than that, many events immediately come to mind one after another.
We talked and discussed various topics at Senseisan, such as Japanese customs that are difficult to understand for foreign citizens, politics, economy, culture, sciences, engineering, and especially interaction on an international level. Simon’s anecdotes of life experience, I found to be almost hypnotizing, yet it would only be near the end of each lesson that I realized all along, he had also been teaching and reinforcing a particular point in English, whether it be grammar, vocabulary, or some other point. Most of them are something that I never even realized until he thought necessary. His imagination and knowledge in creating lessons is unbounded in
preference to using standard boring textbooks.
It was about 10 years ago when I met Simon for the first time. At that time, I had been bored ordinary English conversation schools leaped out on the streets. While looking for a good teacher, one of my friends introduced me Simon. Immediately, I contacted him and told ‘I would like to study English mainly directed at Science and Engineering linked with my work’. On the first day, as Simon was judging my English ability, his commented ‘I used to work as an engineer. Also, I am an experienced teacher. Take my classes. Trust me!’ After I took some private classes, I became curious why he did not talk about Science or Engineering topics. However, my English ability was soon elevated and I found that the field of topics is nothing to do with language itself, no border between fields.
On a personal note, my daughter met Simon twice before he left Japan. One was at Taiwanese restaurant we went out for lunch and the other was at his home a few days before he moved out. My daughter was one and half year old and still could not speak even Japanese. However, it seemed that she felt something while Simon and I were saying our farewells (of course in English!). She suddenly hovered over around Simon’s legs as if she said ‘please do not go away’. Still now (about 1.5 year later), she often asks me ’where has Simon gone? Australia with many koalas? I would like to see him again!’. These days, I have found it difficult to find a suitable English school. I suppose you are so lucky that you are able to see Simon. And, I expect that you will quickly improve your English ability at Senseisan and become excited by his knowledge of different culures!

サイモン＆英語クラスSenseisan
サイモンは、私がかつて出会った中で、最高の先生であり、そして、最良の友人の一人である。彼の人生経験と知識の深さ、交友関係と趣味の幅広さには驚かされる。英語を学びたいと思っている人には、私はサイモンを強く推薦する。それは、外国語を学ぶことの真髄は、その背景にある文化を知り、多くの人と触れ合い、自らの体験したことのないことにも見識を深めることにあり、サイモンを通して多くのことを学べるはずだ、と確信するからである。
サイモンの英語クラス（Senseisan）の素晴らしいところは、英語の勉強だけではない。時たま開催されるサイモン宅でのホームパーティーや、BBQパーティーが、この上なく楽しいのだ。特に、サイモンの作る手料理や、ハンバーガーは、絶品である。集まる人々は、日本在住のオーストラリア人や諸外国出身のサイモンの友人、Senseisanに通っている学生、サラリーマン、医者、主婦、技術者、ミュージシャン・・・、よくもこれだけ雑多な人が集まるものかと驚く。サイモンがいなければ、私がこうした人たちと交流する機会はなかったであろう。そのほか、飲みに行ってバカ騒ぎしたり、ビリヤードに行ったり・・・、思い出には事欠かない。もちろん、Senseisanでも、いろんな話をした。日本の習慣で理解しがたいこと、政治、経済、文化、科学、技術、国際的に通用する振舞い方、サイモンの昔話（インドネシアのジャングルを数カ月かけて横断した、ハーレーでアメリカを縦断しメキシコに遊びに行った、過去の恋愛、結婚・・・）などなど。多くは、私が想像すらしたことがないようなことであったし、また、日本で当たり前と思っていることが実は奇妙に映っているとか、目からうろこのような話とか、大いに刺激を受けた。まさに、サイモンの人生経験の奥深さ、人を引き付ける魅力と、旺盛な好奇心・想像力によるところであろう。
私がサイモンに出会ったのは、今から10年ほど前、街にあふれている英会話学校に飽き飽きし始めていたころだった。良い先生がいないかと探していたところ、友人からサイモンを紹介され、興味を持った。私はすぐにサイモンにコンタクトをとり、私の仕事に直結する「科学・技術のための英語力」を磨きたいと告げた。初めて会った日は、私の英語力の把握が主目的だったようで、裁判制度に関してどう思うか？について話をした。その日のサイモンのコメントは、「Trust me! 私は、かつてエンジニアだった。また、英語教育の経験も深い。俺のクラスを受けてみろ」であった。何度か一対一のプライベートレッスンを受講しても、いっこうに科学・技術の話にならないので疑問に思ったが、私の英語力が向上するのに時間はかからなかった。そして、当初は、科学・技術の英語に特化しようと思っていたが、英語力が上がるにつれ、科学だろうがなんだろうが、言葉に分野は関係がない、ということに気付かされた。
私の娘は、サイモンが日本を離れる直前に2回、サイモンに会っている。一度目は台湾料理屋で一緒に食事をした時、二度目は日本を離れる引っ越しの片づけをしている時だった。当時、彼女は1歳半。もちろん、彼女はまだ日本語すら話せなかったのだが、私とサイモンの会話（もちろん、英語！）に感じるところがあったのだろう。引っ越しの片づけを終え、別れのあいさつをしているときに、娘がサイモンの足に抱きついたのだ。行かないでくれ！と言っているかのように。今、サイモンが日本を離れ一年半ほど経った。今でも、娘は時折、言う。「サイモンはどこに行った？コアラのいるオーストラリア？また会いたい」と。純粋な子供の言うことに、間違いはなかろう。
サイモンが去って、よい英語クラスが見つからず困っている。サイモンに出会えたあなたは幸運だと、私は思う。そして、あなたが、Senseisanで英語を磨き、異文化に触れて刺激を受けられることを、願ってやまない。
